Jazz Tutorials

Posted by sorohanro - June 3rd, 2011

My previous Jazz Masterclass went a bit wrong because some people used it to start a flame war and turned it into shit.
Still, that's not the end of it. I'm making a similar thing on my blog where people can't make flame wars and I can moderate comments if needed.

So, few words to cover some theoretical stuff:
I strongly recommend to take a look over musictheory.net and 8notes.com/theory.
For more specific jazz theory there are some useful links also, tamingthesaxophone.com/jazz-theory and jazz-styles.com (website in French, but Google translator can fix the problem).

And now the lessons + backing tracks:
1 - Blues Tutorial - jazz theory, 3 free backing tracks, 2 famous jazz standards and a rock/ shuffle blues, music sheet.
2 - Cantaloupe Island Jazz Tutorial - backing track, info about song, music sheet.
3 - Blue Bossa Jazz Tutorial & Free Backing Track
4 - Footprints Jazz Tutorial & Free Backing Track
5 - II-V-I Exercises for Trumpet (Bb)

Great stuff. It's too bad about the masterclasses. I really liked the idea but too much debate arose I suppose.

Definitely checking out the bossa one. I had to play My Little Suede Shoes by Charlie Parker in one of my ensembles a few months back, had a lot of fun with that style.

I'm glad that you find it useful. Soon will be more stuff, feel free to check my blog from time to time.

Great to see you're back in buiseness with the teachings! Of course it's too bad the previous thread went out of hand, but that's because of the lack of modding support, so I guess this one will be contained.

Anyways, I fully support what you're doing, teaching the basics of jazz to the non-initiated! I'm personnaly more the fusion and modal type, but I think the songs you chose up to now have the advantage of being simple while not being retarded, so congrats for that!

Thanks again for doing this!!

Glad to see that's useful :)
You might like to try your hands on "Cantaloupe Island" if you're more fusion oriented. Soon will be some more modal stuff as well :)
